Do you think your period is heavy?
See where you stand

Women with heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) may lose 80 mL of blood (about 5 to 6 tablespoons) or more during their period and may have bleeding that lasts longer than 7 days.

A “normal” period (or menstrual flow) may occur every 28 days on average, last 4 to 5 days, and result in a total blood loss of 35 mL to 40 mL (about 2 to 3 tablespoons).
Recognize the possible signs of HMB

Have a menstrual flow that soaks through 1 or more pads or tampons every hour for several hours in a row

Need to double up on pads to control your menstrual flow

Need to change pads or tampons during the night

Have menstrual periods lasting more than 7 days

Have a menstrual flow with blood clots the size of a quarter or larger

Have a heavy menstrual flow that keeps you from doing the things you would do normally

Have constant pain in the lower part of the stomach during your periods

Are tired, lack energy, or are short of breath
How did this happen?
While uterine-related problems, hormone-related problems, and other illnesses or disorders may cause HMB, in some women who have HMB, doctors have been unable to find the cause.
What can I do about it?
Download the Period Tracker, use it to help you keep track of your monthly menstrual symptoms, and bring it with you to your next doctor’s appointment.
